Situationship
A romantic or sexual connection that feels like a relationship, but without a label, agreements or clarity on what it actually is.

When dating doesn't become a relationship, but isn't nothing either
A situationship is a romantic or sexual connection that feels like a relationship: you see each other regularly, there's emotional or physical intimacy, maybe even exclusivity. Only the label and the clarity are missing.
The difference with "just dating" is duration and intensity: a situationship often drags on for weeks or months, without anyone raising the conversation about what it actually is. That lack of clarity is exactly where the term gets its name.
Within The Pineapple Club, you mostly encounter this pattern among members using the Dating feature. Our code of conduct asks for honesty about intentions, precisely to stop a spark turning into a situationship that nobody actually wants.
Why situationships happen so often
It's a recognisable pattern: you're dating someone, but the status of the relationship stays unclear. Academic writing on the subject describes situationships as romantic connections without clarity or a label, with a low level of commitment but relationship-like behaviour similar to a couple's.
Dating apps make it easier to let something continue without naming it: there's always still contact, but never the conversation that leads somewhere. For one person that can feel easy and comfortable, for the other, frustrating.
A situationship doesn't have to be a problem in itself. It only becomes one when one of the two actually wants more, but doesn't say so.
For example
Think of two people who've seen each other weekly for months, been away together, but never once used the word "relationship". Ask about it, and you often get an evasive answer rather than a clear yes or no.
Note: situationships have been studied directly in relationship-science research, see Sexuality & Culture, 2024.
Rather know where you stand?
Ask the question. Within The Pineapple Club, clarity about intentions is part of the deal.
