Origin of the term
Vanilla is the informal term for sex or a sex life without kink, BDSM or other unconventional elements, in other words 'regular' sex. The term dates back to the mid-20th century and refers to vanilla as the default ice cream flavour, without extras, see this background.
Interestingly, the term was initially used mainly within the queer community, to describe heterosexual sex as the only socially accepted form at the time.
Not a judgment, just a word
'Vanilla' is sometimes experienced as belittling, but that's not the intent of the term: it simply describes a preference without kink elements, not an inferior form of sex. Language use within kink communities treats it mainly as a practical distinction, not a statement.
Within The Pineapple Club there's just as much room for vanilla as for kink, and the two often simply blend together. Our code of conduct is about respect for everyone's preference, whatever that may be.
On its own, the label 'vanilla' says little about how someone is wired sexually: two people with a 'vanilla' sex life can differ enormously within that in what they do and don't enjoy. The word is mostly useful as a quick indicator in a conversation, not as a full description of a person. When in doubt, simply asking what someone means is always a good idea.
For example
Vanilla and kink don't exclude each other: many people have a mostly vanilla sex life with the occasional detour, or the other way around. There's no fixed line where one turns into the other. It's also fine to let your preference change over time: someone who was mostly vanilla for years can later become curious about kink, and just as easily the other way around. In the end, the only thing that really matters is what feels good for the two of you together, not which label goes with it.
