What chemsex actually means
Chemsex refers to sexual activity in which people deliberately use certain drugs. It usually involves substances like crystal meth, GHB/GBL or synthetic cathinones, with the aim of prolonging or intensifying the experience, or lowering inhibitions. The term originated in research on the sexual health of men who have sex with men, and has since come into broader use. For more background on chemsex and the substances involved, see Mainline, a Dutch harm-reduction organisation focused specifically on this topic.
So chemsex isn't a general term for drug use: it specifically refers to the combination of drugs and sex. That combination carries clear risks, since the effects of drugs can make it harder to judge boundaries and consent. That's why this topic deserves a different, more careful tone than most other terms in this glossary. Health organisations deliberately treat chemsex as a distinct area of attention, separate from drug use without a sexual context.
Why information matters more than exploration here
The Pineapple Club is not a treatment centre and doesn't give medical or addiction advice. If you run into questions or issues around chemsex yourself, you can turn to Mainline for independent, non-judgmental information and support, a Dutch harm-reduction organisation that focuses specifically on this topic.
Within the community, our code of conduct also applies: it asks everyone to keep consent and boundaries clear, whatever the situation. Because drug use can put exactly that under pressure, chemsex doesn't automatically fit within that agreement. If you mostly know the term from outside your own experience, the same is true for most members.
We still include the term in this glossary for that reason: members sometimes search for it, and a factual answer with a pointer to reliable help is better than an empty search results page, or worse, an unreliable source.
